Origins and development
The new cemetery on Taubenberg opened on 10 October 1906, with the first burial on 13 October. Extensions initially followed Quadenhofstraße and later climbed into the Gerresheim hills. Architect Junghans designed the second, upper chapel in 1966 to reduce long, steep walks for funerals.
Origins: Opened on 10 October 1906. The cemetery is in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim, Taubenberg, at Quadenhofstraße 151, 40625 Düsseldorf. Its area is approximately 33 hectares.
Design and present-day character
The forest cemetery has an older lower section and a higher upper section. The grounds rise to about 120 metres above sea level, making its two chapels and different entrances important when planning a visit.
Read this character description together with the development of Gerresheim Forest Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
